Practice as Research

Within Tate Learning in London the teams have adopted a model of research-led practice, wherein our activities are framed as a process of inquiry underpinned by deep reflective practice.

To support this process we draw on a range of research methods including ethnography and action research.  Likewise the approach that is variously called ‘research-based’, ‘research-led’ or ‘research as’ practice which is being explored by academics and artists currently appears to offer some interesting opportunities that are relevant to learning practice within the art gallery.  I recently gave this presentation to the London team to outline what these opportunities could be and to begin a process whereby elements of our programmes could form the basis of specific practice as research projects.
