  Circuit artist Mandy Roberts shares some of her evaluation from her work with young people on the Circuit programme at Firstsite. Have young people influenced your approach, and the approach of Firstsite?

Mindful that it is not a school. Diff perspective and involvement in both.

J.W  
F.S’ approach to young people – their attitude has changed, but only with the familiar faces.

M.R  
Flexible, tolerant, patient

What have you gained from working with young people in Circuit?  

M.R
Recognise the variety of young people and their interests. Increased awareness and tolerance to behaviour.

J.W
That they are adults.

M.R
Greater understanding of different types of young people. What young people really want to do at Firstsite.

J.W
Better understanding of their different cultures. I feel much more open working with this group.

M.R
Equality – We are all equal, treat each other with mutual respect.

J.W
A shared respect for each side. What they bring to the programme.

Have you developed new mutual understanding of relevant partnerships with the youth sector.

J.W
Yes definitely, especially youth workers at the Waiting Room, and staff members at YES and Barnardos have been crucial in developing our work with young mums.

M.R
Yes, most definitely! On going relationship with the Youth Service.

J.W
We have developed a trusting and good relationship which works well, for both parties involved.

M.R
Mutual respect and understanding has come from long term relationship with Firstsite.

M.R
They don’t have to join YAK. Other groups can access the facilities.

J.W
Ongoing relationships which have developed, have enabled new work to happen.

M.R
Circuit critical friend Gill Cullum is a former youth worker.

Have you gained knowledge or understanding that will enable to work more effectively with the youth sector in the future?

M.R
Yes – Through sharing and hands on experience, and working along side youth workers.

J.W
Yes – because I have a better understanding of how they work with young people, what difficulties they face in terms of budget cuts, and how we can support in development and collaboratively working in the best interest of the young people.

How satisfied are you with the Circuit programme, and the quality of programme and engagement that it has established with Firstsite and elsewhere?

M.R
I feel the quality is good. Although I still don’t feel that enough young people are aware of Circuit.

J.W
Something unique to promote our young people offer: Because the audience is young people and we need to capture their imagination.

J.W
I think the Circuit programme has enabled Firstsite to do some incredible work, including starting a new programme for young people, offering plenty of research trips for our young people, and providing a rich and high quality programme for the young people at Firstsite.

(How) has involvement in Circuit supported your professional development?

J.W
It has enabled me to get mentoring from other artists. It has enabled me to have a good platform to spring from, into the next chapter of my career.

M.R
Working alongside other artists and young people to develop ideas / events / projects.

J.W
Being involved in Circuit has supported my professional development, by enabling me to go on relevant young people training. Attending courses such as: Edinburgh international festival Encounters, and attending conferences relating to the arts and youth sector.

M.R
Varied programme of professional development – events sharing ideas and practice.

J.W
Involvement in Circuit has also enabled me to attend our Circuit partners events, to meet their staff and young people. To discover how other galleries work with young people.

M.R
The opportunity to experience how other organisations and galleries operate /programme / evaluate.

J.W
It has increased my confidence in talking to partners and hosting meetings. It has enabled me to develop my career by gaining experience in programming and project management.
