An experience

At this point, I was nervous about saying the wrong things but oh boy who knew after being sat around that table, I would find a new found love in Contemporary Art. I don’t always understand some of what I call the ‘Arty’ terms but I slowly pick them up.

Guest Artist Workshop group

I started working with Circuit and Collabor-8 after a focus group with NGY MyPlace/Base 51 about April/May time, at this point I didn’t know what to expect from either Collabor-8 or from an Art Gallery. I had mixed feeling and emotions about going to the focus group, because I didn’t know what to expect, to be honest I was really expecting about 10 young people from NGY and a bunch of old snobs running the group.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go to the focus group because I didn’t want to be stuck around a bunch of old arty snobs, that know everything and us as a group to sit there and not do anything, but thankfully I went to it and it wouldn’t be anything that I was expecting, it wasn’t old people, I was surrounded by people around my age group. I was a bundle of nerves sat in the my first focus group in  a gallery, but I wouldn’t show it, I don’t really show emotions.

At this point, I was nervous about saying the wrong things but oh boy who knew after being sat around that table, I would find a new found love in Contempory Art, I don’t always understand some of what I call the ‘Arty’ terms but I slowly pick them up.

The minute Becky, started to talk I was drawn it to every word, she was telling me and everyone else that it isn’t just an art gallery, there is actually more than it looked like, she went on to explain that Collabor-8 was a project run under circuit and once a month they ran a social, also there are live bands that preform every week which is also pretty cool.

So after the focus group, Becky and two of Collabor-8’s young people took us down to the social, and it open up a world I never even knew existed not just from art but also it opened up a whole new book of emotions and feelings. I actually was being excepted by what I was calling arty snobs, and plus there was a lot of people my age around which was pretty cool, but once I left I didn’t go back until around June time.

Around about June time I started to wonder, who am I and whats my purpous on this planet, then I started to wonder around Nottingham Town Centre, that’s where I decided it was time to message Collabor-8, this one message would actually get me started on a whole new world of art, media and so much more, I got invited in for an interview type discussion with one of the Collabor-8 young people and that’s when I started to work with Collabor-8 on a bigger scale, I started to feel really nervous again though as I was invited to a ‘Steering Meeting’ had no clue what to expect from this either.

So walking backup to Nottingham Contempory, I went to my first steering meeting, nervous as hell but you know, I’d wing it like everything else, this is where I found out that Collabor-8, Circuit and Co was running a festival and that was me.

I’ve been working the Collabor-8, Nottingham Contempory and even Circuit for nearly 2 months properly now and I wouldn’t change it for the world, they blow my mind everytime I walk into a room with them, they are a great bunch of people and I’m proud to say I’m apart of the Collabor-8 Collective.

Thank You Circuit and Collabor-8 For Making Me Feel So Welcome

So far out my journey so far with Circuit I have felt so much emotion:

  • Stress
  • Happiness
  • Annoyed
  • Not ‘Arty’
  • Anxious
  • Nervous
  • Petrified
  • Complete
  • Afraid
  • Calm
  • Content
  • Fear
  • Keen
  • Laid Back
