Whitworth WYC Presents: AND NOW WE ARE PLASTIC

On the 26th January 2017, the Whitworth Young Contempories group premiered our exhibition titled And Now We Are Plastic which marks the first exhibition curated by young people at the Whitworth Art Gallery. The exhibition which is now open to the public shows a culmination of 6 months of hard work, organising and planning of how we wanted to present our idea.

The exhibition, showing from 27th January – 2 April 2017, explores how the lines separating the digital and physical world are becoming blurred as we evolve with technology. In the age that our generation live in we have observed how we have become so moldable that we are essentially living in a ‘Plastic Age’. We also wanted to contrast our modern view of the world with older pieces as well as newer ones to show the parallels between the two different times. Through months of deliberation and looking through the vast collection of work that we have at the Whitworth we finally care to decide on the key pieces that represent our theme. Each piece in the collection was carefully selected by members of the WYC group to reflect the plasticity of our own humanity. The works chosen included selections from artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, our first showing of experimental textiles by Georgina von Etzdorf.

To kick-start the exhibition the gallery opened the day before for a premiere night where audiences had the opportunity to explore the whole gallery and view the artworks in the collection centre, enjoy live music featuring likes of Ménage à TroisChimpo, Lychee and take part in some of our workshops such as digital knitting.

Come on down to the Whitworth and check it out!
