FROST FAIR at the Whitworth

On the 3rd and 4th of December the Whitworth Art Gallery transformed into a winter wonderland, celebrating the winter month with a weekend of fun activities and events with the aim of bringing people together. The Frost Fair was inspired by the Danish word ‘Hygge’ which means cosiness and wellbeing and was put on at the Whitworth to bring together local communities.

Over the weekend, we had an eco-friendly ice rink, and Outdoor cinema showing classics like the Moomins, a craft market where you could buy everything from pottery to blankets, a street food fair with a wide selection of foods and drinks and workshops all around the gallery.

One of the biggest attractions was a performance put and by Walk The Plank, which was a theatrical performance using puppetry and fire called The Ice Queen & The Ice Queens Courtyard. It was a display of ‘fire and ice’ that captivated audiences. As a finale, we had a performance by Whitworth on Fire and a firework show on the Sunday evening. A perfect way to end the winter festival.

In the two days, we managed to draw a crowd from the whole of Greater Manchester and beyond, extending outside of the UK to places like Norway and France.
